Hastings is considered an expert in Web 2.0 collaborative work and has written several peer reviewed articles on the subject. This report introduces the concept of online collaboration with Web 2.0 tools to librarians and proposes potential benefits for incorporating a social element for group collaboration. The purpose of the report is to explain collaborative work in cloud computing and how it can benefit virtual group work, specifically when distance between members is a component of group dynamics. In addition, Hastings describes the benefits of storing documents in a single and central location. All relevant information is available to all members at all times.
This resource and review is of chapter 5. The key topics discussed are distance, asynchronous and synchronous communication, distributed computing, and benefits. A few examples are provided to illustrate how group collaboration can occur productively. An emphasis on how physical distance is no longer an obstacle when virtual teams work on projects. Collaboration 2.0 significantly minimizes or eliminates the distance and time zone challenges for members in various locations, near and far.
